OHCHR delegates meet jailed ex-pres, ex-VP

A delegation from Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has met jailed former president of the Maldives Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

Foreign Ministry revealed that the visiting delegation met President Yameen, who is currently being held under state custody until the end of money laundering trial, while he was hospitalized at state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male'. The delegation visited the jail at which ex-VP Adeeb is being held in order to meet him.

The Foreign Ministry did not reveal any details regarding the meetings.

OHCHR is visiting Maldives to assess the current situation of Maldives and to assist in identifying ways in which the human rights issues in the Maldives can be addressed.

The delegation also met with the presidential commission on investigating Murders and Enforced disappearances, senior officials of the government as well as former Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed who is currently under house arrest, and former top court judge Ali Hameed.
