Minister Nahula refuses to back opposition candidates

Transport Minister and Jumhooree Party council member, Aishath Nahula has stated that she would not support any candidates backed by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom,

The minister made her statement while answering a question posed by a reporter after inaugurating a newly established hotel in Hulhumale' on Wednesday night.

The minister said she could never forgive the former president for his actions. Minister Aisha's political career took off after she became politically active with the arrest of her family members during President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's tenure in 2017. Charged with bribery, her husband Gasim Ibrahim and step-son Ibrahim Siyad Gasim were held under state detention, until the end of their trial during the former president's rule.

While the minister refuses to back President Yameen's candidates, her husband, the leader of Jumhooree Party and current Speaker of the parliament Gasim Ibrahim recently confirmed that the party will be backing several candidates of the opposition in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Although JP is part of the ruling coalition, the party formed an alliance with the opposition after disputes on how to allocate parliament seats among the coalition for the parliamentary election.

Yameen Abdul Gayyoom is currently being held at Maafushi remand jail until the end of his money laundering trial. Last week, Gasim IBrahim called for the immediate release of the former president.
