India foreign minister arrives in Maldives

The Indian Minister of External Affairs Shushma Swaraj arrived in the Maldives Sunday on an official visit to the archipelago.

She was welcomed at Velana International Airport by her Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid.

During her two day visit to the Maldives she will be meeting with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, along with parliament speaker Gasim Ibrahim and members of the cabinet, to discuss ways to strengthen ties and cooperation between the two countries.

India's top diplomat is also expected to discuss both existing and future bilateral agreements including further cooperation in areas such as health and trade.

AVAS understands that the government has planned a special ceremony to honour the visiting Indian minister, though government officials have remained tight-lipped over the visit.

India has seen a major upswing in ties with its tiny neighbour since the then opposition led by Solih secured a stunning victory in the presidential elections last November.
