UN Resident Coordinator praises democratic progress in Maldives

UN Resident Coordinator to Maldives Ms Shoko Noda has stated that the Maldives has come far in terms of consolidating the rights and freedoms assured by the Constitution, and that the future of democracy in the Maldives is bright.

Ms Noda, who is also the UNDP Resident Representative to Maldives made her statement during a farewell call to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday. The meeting took place at the President’s Office.

During the meeting, President Solih acknowledged the important work done by the UNDP in the past and in the present, and noted and thanked UNDP for their contribution to the social and economic development of Maldives.

Ms. Noda thanked the President for his words and commended the government’s efforts in key areas such as decentralization, women’s empowerment and economic development. She assured that the UNDP would assist the government in realizing its development goals.

She further congratulated the President on his success in the 2018 presidential election and the government’s success in the recent parliamentary election. The results showcase the people’s support for the government’s legislative agenda, noted Ms. Noda. She expressed hope that the newly elected parliament would cooperate with the government in delivering the pledges made by the government to the people of the Maldives.
