AG requests parliament to narrow Supreme Court authority

Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath, who is also a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has requested the Parliament to prevent the Supreme Court from obstructing JSC's decision to suspend Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi.

JSC on Thursday made the decision not to accept the stay order issued by the Supreme Court earlier the same day regarding Didi's suspension, stating that the Supreme Court order takes away the constitutional privileges given to the commission.

Members of the JSC were summoned to the Parliament's Judiciary Committee on Thursday night, where AG Riffath related to the committee information on the decisions made by the commission.

AG Riffath requested the parliament to take immediate action to bring changes in such that it would allow JSC to implement their decision on Judge Didi's suspension without interference from the Supreme Court, and to take legal measures that would prevent the Supreme Court from dismissing parts of articles and bills passed by parliament.

The Attorney General also requested the parliament's support in monitoring the qualifications of judges.

"The standard of judges in the courts have not been monitored properly up until now, leading to the public's distrust in the courthouses. We have to take appropriate measures to investigate allegations of criminal offences and corruption against the judges efficiently in a transparent manner", he said.

The AG further asked the parliament to expedite the measures to be taken by relevant authorities to achieve this, and to bring constitutional changes to address the issue.
