Construction of bridge linking Male', Thilafushi to begin next year

President Ibrahim Mohamed on Friday stated that the construction of the bridge linking Male' city with Thilafushi industrial zone will be completed will commence next year and is expected to be completed within the next two years.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, the President revealed that the government is currently seeking consultants for the project that would link Male; and Thilafushi via a causeway, and has shortlisted eligible candidates. While the practical work of the project will begin next February, the project is expected to be concluded within two years, said the President.

"The land reclamation for the project is scheduled to begin in November and the structural work would commence in February. The project requires approximately two years for completion", said the President.

The government submitted a proposal seeking funds for a project that would interlink Male' City, Villimale' and the Thilafushi Industrial zone at the Maldives Partnership Forum held last month. It is estimated that around US$ 488 million would be required for the project.

A project that links the four areas of the Gretaer Male' Zone was first announced by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
