Police release statement on Rilwan's murder

Maldives Police Service (MPS) have revealed that the authority will investigate the murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan, and take legal action against any police officers involved in the incident.

In a statement released late Monday, police said discussions were held with the Presidential Commission Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances regarding the findings of the commission that require further investigation by the police. The Professional Standard Command of MPS will investigate the case further and take necessary action, said the police.

The statement further expressed regret that the police had failed to provide adequate cooperation to Rilwan's family in seeking justice for Rilwan.

President of the Commission Husnu-al-Suood revealed on Sunday that Rilwan was murdered by an extremist religious group after he was abducted and taken to a boat. While Rilwan was deemed a 'freethinker' by the group, they targeted to kill Rilwan and several like-minded people who shared the same ideologies, said Suood.
