Passports of 14 suspects withheld over Rilwan's abduction, murder

The passports of 14 individuals involved in the abduction and murder of Miniwan News journalist Ahmed Rilwan have been withheld.

The travel bans were imposed based on the findings of the Presidential Commission Investigating Murders and Enforced Disappearances, which were revealed on Sunday.

The President of the Commission Husnu-Al-Suood said Rilwan's death stemmed from a dispute between an extremist religious organization and a group of people with 'progressive' ideologies who advocated for human rights in the Maldives.

While the accounts of the witnesses on how he was killed have some discrepancies, one account states Rilwan was wrapped in a net before he was killed while the other states he was made to utter the 'Shahada', the Islamic testimony of faith before he was murdered, said Suood.

The summary report on the case publicized by the Parliament revealed Rilwan was decapitated before being sunk at sea.
