Parliament schedules special sitting for Monday

Parliament has scheduled a special sitting outside of regular sessions for Thursday

MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ali Azim tweeted on Wednesday that MDP lodged a request to hold a special sitting of the parliament outside of the session.

While the special sitting has been scheduled for 10:00 am on Thursday, the agenda states the sitting is being held to submit amendments to the Terrorism Act.

At a press conference held on Monday at the President's Office, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih emphasized that the revelations of the inquiry into murdered journalist Ahmed Rilwan’s case made it more apparent that significant amendments are required to be made to some laws; specifically mentioning the Prevention of Terrorism Act and Criminal Procedure Code.

The police have been conducting wide-scale searches in Male' and Addu City based on the report on Rilwan's case that was issued by the Presidential Commission Investigating Enforced Disappearance and Murders. During the final sitting of the first session of the 19th Parliament held last Thursday, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed had stated that a special sitting may be held if an emergency need arises after a session has been concluded.
