Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has stated that Maldives Police Service are taking action against those who carry out acts and speech against the religion of Islam.
In a tweet posted on Friday, Commissioner Hameed said the authority is taking lawful action against those who slander Islam as well as those who make threats of violence to persons.
The commissioner encouraged the public to report to the police on both extremes.
"As we take action against those who carry out acts/speech against our beloved religion of Islam, we will also take lawful action against those who make threats of violence to persons. As we continue to monitor, we encourage the public to report to us on both these extremes", wrote the Commissioner.
Recently, a report prepared by NGO Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) titled ‘Preliminary Assessment of Radicalization in the Maldives’ prompted a public uproar due to it containing derogatory criticism on Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) and principles of Islam. While the police are currently instigating the case, Hameed earlier assured that the police consider the case as a serious matter.
While many have called to ban the organization, Youth Ministry, the supervisory authority in-charge of clubs and organizations, have imposed a temporary cessation of activities upon MDN.
