Expats gather in thousands for registration

Registration of illegal expatriates in the Maldives have been resumed after a break.

Economic Ministry had announced that they will be offering re-registration services for illegal migrant workers in the country at the National Stadium every Saturday. However, the regulation program was not conducted last Saturday.

This Saturday, the ministry resumed the program at the stadium at 7.30 am. Queues were formed by expats since the night before, with thousands gathered at the stadium in hopes of becoming legal.

A task force named 'National Task Force on Issues Related to Migrant Workers' was established by the government to resolve immigrant issues. One of the steps taken by the workforce was to suspend bringing in new laborers from Bangladesh for a period of one year. The task force is also allowing the opportunity for unregistered expat to register themselves.
