Establishment of task force recommended to investigate delays in court proceedings

Parliament's Judiciary Committee will be recommending Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to establish a task-force to identify the reasons behind delays in court proceedings.

The judiciary watchdog recently prepared a report on pending cases at Criminal Court and presented it to the parliament, requesting the parliament's counsel on the matter.

The report was researched by the Judiciary Committee and issued a second report on their findings, which proposed to establish an inter-agency task force that includes representatives from relevant entities to resolve the issues.

According to the committee report, the task forces' mandate includes identifying the reason behind delays in court proceedings, and proposing solutions to the issues. The task force is also responsible for preparing a report on how the proposed solutions can be implemented.

The report sent to the Parliament by JSC noted that over 1900 cases remain unfinished at the Criminal Court. While 12 cases have been pending for over 12 years, 12 cases have been in court for a period between 5-10 years.

The report also mentioned the number of cases being handled by each individual judge of the court and also outlined the educational and work experience of Criminal Court judges.
