A man being sought by the Presidential Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances has been arrested aboard a vessel in distress.
Earlier on Friday, the commission issued a notice seeking Irufaan Rushdhy for investigation purposes, and requested the public to share information on the man.
The police on Saturday said Irufaan Rushdhy was discovered aboard a vessel that was assisted by the police after the boat ran out of fuel.
MNDF received reports of a vessel in distress after its engine stopped off Gaafu Dhaalu Kaadahdhoo on Saturday. Four people were aboard 36-foot vessel named 'Blue Whale' at the time of the incident.
Police said all four people aboard the vessel were detained due to suspicious activity, including traveling to Thinadhoo at such an odd hour. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that one of the men on the vessel was Irufan, after which he was promptly arrested, said the police.
Authorities have been searching for Irufaan for the past three years for the alleged murder of an under-age boy Fathih Mohamed of Maafanu Sarumaage during a fight between two gangs on June 3, 2016. While the presidential commission has not revealed their reason for seeking Irufan, it is believed he was being sought for the investigation of the same case.
