Pres appoints Commissioner, Dep Commissioner General of Taxation

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday appointed Fathuhulla Jameel as the Commissioner General of Taxation, and Asma Shafeeu as the Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation

Fathuhulla Jameel holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Accounting from the Oxford Brookes University (Institute: Sunway University College, Malaysia), and is a member of the Fellow Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA), and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). He earlier served as the Director-General – Audit and Investigation, and Director General – Revenue Services at Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). Before his new appointment, he served as the Manager – Tax, Risk and Compliance at Dhiraagu.

Asma Shafeeu holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Accounting and Finance from the Oxford Brookes University (Institute: Nilai International University, Malaysia) and a Diploma in Accounting from the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT {UK}). Prior to her new appointment, she served as the Director-General – Planning and Development at MIRA.

The President presented the the appointees with their Letters of Appointment at a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Thursday afternoon. The appointments were made following approval from the Parliament.

President Solih recently ratified the Second Amendment to the Tax Administration Act. The amendment, signed into law on 12 September 2019, reconstituted the composition of the governing board of MIRA—the President appoints five of the seven-member board, including the Commissioner General of Taxation and Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation.

Under the new amendments, the board of MIRA must be reconstituted to include Commissioner General of Taxation and Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation within 30 days after the amendments are ratified. After the deadline passed, MIRA remained in a legal limbo until Thursday's appointment.

The position of Commissioner General of Taxation was most recently filled by Yazeed Mohamed while Hassan Zareer was the Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation. However, both individuals lost their positions due to the recently ratified amendments.
