Heavy rain expected for next three days

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has stated that the current rainfall being experienced in Maldives is the result of a low pressure trough formed in the region and that the heaviest rainfall is likely to be experienced on Monday.

Speaking to AVAS, an official from MET Office said rainfall is expected across the country for the next three days. Northern and central atolls will experience the heaviest rainfall, the MET Office predicted.

MET Office has issued a white alert for heavy showers and thunderstorms in the northern atolls for the next 24 hours. The official said seas would be rough in northern and central atoll regions and moderate in the southern region.

Winds are expected to vary between 05 – 15 miles per hour in southern atolls and at 08 – 18 miles per hour elsewhere. Gusts of 40 miles per hour are expected during showers in northern atolls, the official said.

Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution.
