Ex-home minister faces corruption probe

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is probing former Home Minister Umar Naseer regarding the electronic tags procured by Home Ministry in 2016.

An official from ACC said they are investigating the project awarded to a private party to purchase electronic tags for the Home Ministry. No further details were shared.

The Home Ministry in 2016 fitted electronic tags on dangerous and known criminals to monitor their whereabouts and activity. The project was led by the then Home Minister Umar Naseer. Even then, it was rumored that corruption was involved in procuring the tags. However, the company that the project was awarded to and the details of the bid were not revealed.

Umar on Sunday took to Facebook to write about the project and said it was awarded to the company that submitted the lowest bid. ACC's clearance was sought before awarding the project, and while the government previously looked into the case, no companies linked to him or his family submitted any bids to Home Ministry, said Umar.
