Bail application for ex-Pres Yameen filed to High Court

While former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom is serving his five-year prison sentence, a bail application has been filed on his behalf at the High Court.

Yameen's lawyer and former Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel posted a tweet today wherein he wrote that a bail application is presented to the court on behalf of the former president.

He further expressed his confidence that the bail will be granted to Yameen as well, due to the fact that the Maldivian courts have always upheld such fundamental rights.

Yameen Abdul Gayyoom was sentenced to five years imprisonment on November 28, 2019 due to depositing of US$ 1 million (in two cheques) issued by MMPRC's highly corrupted SOF in his saving account at the Islamic Bank. Further, the court ordered him to pay MVR 77.1 million to MIRA as compensation within six months.
