Previous govt. released passports of 2 expatriates

The Controller of Immigration, Mohamed Ahmed Hussain (Hanafee) said that it is the previous government that released the passports of two expatriates in 2018, while Criminal Court has ordered to hold in connection to a drug case.

The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office has requested the National Integrity Commission (NIC) to investigate a case of releasing passports of two expatriates. The PG Office said the Criminal Court had ordered to hold passports of two Bangladeshi expatriates involved in two cases of drug trafficking and importing drugs to the Maldives. However, their passports were released and they were allowed to leave the country.

The PG Office said that they have requested NIC to investigate the case and take actions against the authority that is responsible for the negligence. However, the PG Office has not revealed the responsible authority. This is the first that the PG Office has requested NIC to prosecute a government authority.

The Controller of Immigration said that this incident happened in November 2018 and that the Immigration will be always ready to support the relevant government authorities in solving such issues.

The PG Hussain Shameen has raised his concern on the issue on twitter saying that there are numerous issues to be solved in the country.

The PG Office said that they will be more watchful over the actions of the government authorities as per the Constitution of the Maldives.
