Mayor of Male' City Council Shifa Mohamed has reiterated her decision to contest for another term as the mayor in the upcoming local council election.
In a tweet posted on Friday, Mayor Shifa said she remains committed to her announcement made three months back on her decision to contest for mayor.
She continues to aim to serve the people of Male' city sincerely, said Mayor Shifa in her tweet.
Heavy criticism has been aimed at Shifa, who has been the mayor of Male' city for the past two terms. Many have expressed concern about the mayor's failure to resolve issues faced in the city. Also, Shifa being the former education minister during President Mohamed Nasheed's tenure, many allegations have been made against her by other members of the city council.
Several candidates have expressed interest in contesting for Mayor of the City Council in the local council election slated for April 4. Four members of MDP have announced their interest in candidacy thus far.
The MDP primary scheduled for January 31st is expected to be highly competitive. In addition to the current mayor, Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef, and MP Ahmed Niyaz who represent Henveiru Southern Constituency have also expressed interest in contesting for Male’ City Mayor.
Additionally, former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu from opposing PPM, and former MP Alhan Fahmy has made known their interest in running for Mayor.
