Ministry of Tourism and the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) initiated discussion today in light of resorts and guest houses re-broadcasting TV channels without licenses.
Broadcom stated that while re-broadcasting can only be permitted through a license issued by the commission, a number of resorts have been providing unlicensed services. Moreover, they added that re-broadcasting foreign channels without a license is an international copyrights issue.
The commission further highlighted that the state has not yet received the returns they are obliged to as a 'license fee' in compensation for unlicensed re-broadcasting. In addition, Broadcom stated that the lack of cooperation from relevant authorities has lead to considerable difficulties in tackling the issue.
