'State resources being misused for LCE campaign'

Opposing PPM-PNC coalition has accused the ruling government of misusing state funds and resources for the upcoming local council election campaigns.

A press statement issued by the coalition stated that while it is evident that the government makes promises that they cannot fulfil, the same strategy is being used for the council elections. The party cautioned the public not to fall for the tricks.

The statement further alleged that state resources were being misused both by the government and during trips undertaken by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. The opposition called to stop such acts.

The Speaker and other senior officials of the government are preparing to visit recently declared city, Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi on Sunday for a symposium amid these claims.

While similar accusations were made against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the past, alleging that the presidential speedboat and other resources were utilized during the parliamentary election campaigns, the same accusations were made against the Speaker.

However, the President's Office had later clarified that all expenses of the trips were borne by main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

A complaint was filed at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for the same issue. Although ACC said they are looking into the complaints, no further details were disclosed.
