Parliament holds emergency assembly due to excessive erosion

Parliament's Environment and Climate Change Committee have decided to hold an emergency assembly in light of recent cases of erosion in various islands around the Maldives.

They disclosed that the assembly is scheduled to take place Wednesday, 11:00 AM at the People's Majilis [Parliament].

While there have previously been several cases of erosion in islands, this is the first of this magnitude. In this weather, sites within B. Atoll, and R. Atoll have especially faced excessive erosion.

Minister Dr Hussain Rasheed stated that erosion in the 'Iruvai' season has been relatively high this year compared to previous years. He said that they would be taking steps against the occurrence after looking further into the matter.

The Minister has also initiated visits to islands that have been eroded the most. As such, he has currently visited islands within Ha. Atoll, Hdh. Atoll, and Sh. Atoll. Minister Hussain Rasheed will also be visiting B. Atoll and R. Atoll shortly, he said.
