Nasheed comments on TMA, MACL conflict

Former President and current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has stressed the importance of coming to an agreement with Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) regarding the new seaplane terminal being established at Velana International Airport.

While rumors that the government intends to hand over the operation of the seaplane terminal to TMA have become louder, the government has arranged to allocate a large chunk of land to the company for a period of two years.

However, speaking at the Financial Committee on Wednesday, CEO of TMA, A.U.M. Fauzy said that MACL had agreed to allocate 19,000 square meters of land for a span of fifteen years at US$ 10.35 per square meter. As such, he requested that they do so accordingly.

In a tweet posted Thursday, Nasheed said all negotiations between TMA and the government took place during the administration of former president Abdlla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. If an agreeable solution is not reached on the matter, it could delay the opening of the new runway as well as back the government into compensating TMA.

Speaker Nasheed emphasized the importance of a mutually beneficial agreement, and said that an immediate investigation needs to be launched regarding those who engaged in wrongdoing on handling the matter.

The Speaker commented on the subject similarly on Wednesday as well, stating that both parties needed to come to an agreement expeditiously. Filing claims against wrongdoers associated with the issue was another matter entirely, said Nasheed.
