'Barriers hindering women must be removed' : Pres Solih

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that he is committed to removing barriers hindering women from their full potential.

In a tweet published on the occasion of International Women's Day, President Solih said the innumerable contributions made by women that have uplifted and enriched human life are being celebrated today.

"We are firmly of the belief that an equal world is an enabled world, and recommit to removing barriers hindering women from their full potential," wrote President Solih.

President Solih's administration has taken several steps to empower women. While seven women fullfil ministership positions on the cabinet, female judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court for the first time in the country's history. The administration has also amended the Decentralization Act such that 33% of seats on local councils are designated for women. President Solih said the benefits of the decision will soon become evident.

Every year, March 8 is celebrated as International Women's Day.
