Vilifushi MP Hassan Afeef has accused the government of awarding a contract to a company while a state-owned company had bid a lower price for the same project.
While debating the amendments proposed to the criminal procedural law on Wednesday, MP Afeef said the actions of the government must be scrutinized and appropriate action must be taken.
In this regard, a letter recently sent to the Public Finance Committee spoke of an alleged corruption that had taken place within the government, revealed Afeef.
The lawmaker said a local company of which 90% of shares are held by the government submitted a bid for a government project. However, the contract was awarded to a company for a price higher by MVR 25 million than that was proposed by the SOE. The material required for the project has already been procured, and arrangements were made hastily, said Afeef.
Afeef said the Speaker of the parliament and former president of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed is also aware of the case, as he had received the same letter. He called on the parliament to investigate the corruption allegations.
