The World Health Organization (WHO) has donated 5000 COVID-19 test kits to the Maldives.
The kits were received on behalf of the Maldives government by Health Minister Abdulla Ameen at a ceremony held Sunday. The organization has previously donated 1000 kits to the archipelago.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ameen said the government is working to increase its testing capacities. Acknowledging WHO's contribution, the minister noted that the initial testing facilities were set up with WHO's aid.
The WHO and Maldives have always maintained close relations. The organization has always acknowledged Maldives' efforts in tackling health issues.
In addition to increasing the country's testing capacities, the government is working on formulating a guideline to be used if the virus spreads across Maldives. Testing and treatment facilities will be arranged accordingly, said the minister.
He further noted that operation centers will be established in the atolls if the virus spreads to the atolls, and said the ministry is working to ensure that the roles of island councils and other relevant entities are clearly established and strengthened to deal with the outbreak.
The minister called on all healthcare personnels in the Maldives to come out and assist the country in combating the virus during this time of need.
13 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives thus far. The state of public health emergency has been declared in the country for a period of 30 days.
