Five frontline defence force officers test positive for COVID-19

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has revealed that five MNDF officers have tested positive for COVID-19.

In the daily news brief being held by the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) twice daily, Colonel Hussain Ali said so far, five MNDF officers have tested positive for the virus. He further said additional officers who had contact with the five officers have been quarantined.

“We came out to work in the frontline having the understanding that the officers will potentially become infected with the virus. After their due time in quarantine, they will resume their duties ”, said Hussain Ali.

On Sunday, Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that an MNDF officer had contracted the virus, and that 41 direct contacts of the officer had been traced. However, no further details of the case have been revealed since then.

In the news brief held on Monday, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed said there are over 600 police and defence force officers working in the frontline of COVID-19 related matters while being quarantined at the workplace. Minister Ali Waheed further said that the government pays utmost importance to the safety and wellbeing of the frontline workers.
