Nurses Day: Nurses call on govt to strengthen health sector

Nurses of the Maldives have called on the government to prioritize the health sector.

May 12 marks International Nurses Day. A statement issued by the Maldives Nurses and Midwifery Council on the occasion of Nurses Day said nurses have always been in the service of the nation during critical times. While the country is currently fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic, the council noted that nurses are tirelessly working at the frontlines at this moment of national crisis.

In their statement, the council said the current pandemic is a call to further strengthen the country's health sector, and urged the government to do the needful.

Maldives Nurses and Midwifery Council is managed by the Health Ministry. The council said providing opportunities for nurses to pursue further education and training will ultimately save health sector expenditures.

In the statement, the nurses further assured that all nurses of Maldives are dedicated in their service to curb the spread COVID-19 in the Maldives.

“Nurses have always shown an example of courage in providing skilled and experienced service in any health crisis faced by the nation. We have always been helpful companions in all situations to ensure the safety and security of our patients.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has dedicated this year as the year of Nurses to celebrate the 200th birthday of "Florence Nightingale” - the pioneer of modern nursing service.
