Orange alert issued as weather worsens

An 'orange' weather advisory alert has been issued for the first time in recent history after high winds and rough seas were experienced in central Maldives.

The alert was issued for areas between Baa and Faafu atoll. Maldives Meteorological Services said winds averaging 34 to 40 mph and rough seas are expected. The alert was issued from 1700 hrs to 1900 hrs.

The Meteorological Service also warned of unfavourable weather in other areas. A yellow alert has been issued from Noonu to Meemu atoll for the same duration. A white alert was issued for southern atolls Gaaf Alif and Addu atoll.
