73rd World Health Assembly commences virtually

The 73rd World Health Assembly commenced on Monday.

Health Minister, Abdulla Ameen is leading the Maldivian delegation in the virtual assembly. Senior officials from the Health Ministry, doctors working in the technical advisory group of COVID-19 pandemic, and the Maldivian Mission in Geneva are participating in the assembly alongside the minister. The topic of the speeches at this year's forum will be on “COVID-19 Response”.

Crucial decisions are taken at international level during the assembly attended by highest-ranking government officials from all over the world. In previous years, the assembly was held in Geneva, Switzerland over the span of a week. However, this year the meeting is being held virtually from May 18 to 19 and is divided into three sessions each day. A total of 194 nations are participating in this year’s assembly.

The 73rd World Health Assembly will be concluded after endorsing crucial decisions related to COVID-19 pandemic. A decision will also be made on the dates to reconvene the assembly later this year in Geneva.
