Over 3000 people stranded across Maldives due to the lockdown imposed in capital Male' have been permitted to return to the city.
Male' city was placed on lockdown on April 15 after the first case of local transmission of COVID-19 was detected in the city.
Maldives Police Service on Tuesday said 3016 Male' residents stranded outside of Male' were permitted to return to their homes between April 24 until now. The permits are issued through a special police permit portal, and Male' residents stranded elsewhere are instructed to apply for permits by providing details of their particular situations.
The government is also making arrangements to transport island residents stranded in Male' city back to their homes. However, all persons traveling from Male' will have to complete a 14-day quarantine at a designated facility before being allowed to return to their homes. Currently, over 800 people are completing the transition quarantine.
