Will become evident that more that two parties exist in the Maldives: JP

Deputy Leader of Jumhoory Party (JP), Ameen Ibrahim has stated that the fact that more than two political parties exist in the Maldives will become evident at the 'right time'.

In a tweet published on Friday night, Ameen said the history makes it clear that the people's ideologies are not restricted to that of two main parties, implying that JP is also an influential political party. Ameen made the remark while former Vice President of Maldives and former JP member, Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed recently joined Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) after leaving JP. Jameel had declared that PPM as ‘the only choice’ for the public.

Senior officials of PPM have been applauding Jameel upon him joining the party, some have said he is a 'kingmaker'.

Vice-chairperson of JP Ahmed Saud said since the emergence of the multiparty system in the Maldives, candidates had sought ways to gains JP’s Leader Qasim Ibrahim’s backing and support in every presidential election. He added that Qasim has played a massive role in electing all recent presidents of the Maldives.

JP’s Leader Qasim’s Ibrahim’s played an enormous role in the presidential election of 2008, 2013, and in 2018. Qasim contested in the presidential election of 2008 and 2013 but was unable to gain sufficient votes to reach the second round. In the two elections, the two candidates who achieved the most numbers of votes worked to gain Qasim’s support; an MDP coalition in 2008 and a PPM coalition in 2013, and again an MDP coalition in 2018, all of which included JP. Those who won the presidential election with the help of Qasim have described him as a “kingmaker”.
