Disgraced minister dismissed as police investigate misconduct

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has dismissed Ali Waheed from his cabinet post as the Maldives’ Minister of Tourism. Ali Waheed was dismissed after his failure to comply with the President’s request to submit his resignation.

President Solih on Wednesday ordered the minister to resign from the cabinet following several complaints of misconduct.

Multiple complaints of sexual harassment and misconduct that are said to have taken place within the ministry were lodged to both the president and the Gender Ministry. A police case was also filed. The victims of the incidents spoke directly with the president, after which the president immediately ordered Ali Waheed’s resignation. Employees of the Tourism Ministry and the public alike have applauded the president for taking quick action.

The President appointed the Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, as the acting Minister of Tourism on a provisional basis.
