Tuesday's parliament sitting cancelled; no sittings this week

The parliament sitting scheduled for Tuesday has been cancelled.

The parliament was scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday following the Eid al Alha holidays. Sittings are usually held every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The Secretariat said Tuesday's sitting has been postponed and will next be held on 10th August, Monday. However, committee meetings will still be held this week.

The Parliament Secretariat said the cancellation has been informed to all members, and that no more sittings will be held for the remainder of the week.

Some members have called to hold the parliament sittings virtually with the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases recorded in the Maldives over the past few days. The secretariat has not yet made a decision on the matter.

While parliament sittings scheduled for the week have been cancelled, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also ordered the closure of government offices for the rest of the week.

The Maldives on Monday recorded 129 new cases of COVID-19, with the tally now at 4,293.
