COVID-19: New curfew imposed in capital Male'

Authorities have imposed a curfew from 10 pm to 5 am due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in capital Male’.

In a press conference held Tuesday afternoon, the Health Emergency Operation Centre, HEOC said the curfew will be in effect from Tuesday night. Shops and restaurants will have to close by 09:30 pm, said HEOC.

The Health Ministry has announced that gatherings of more than five people will also be prohibited. Additionally, only those in the capital for essential needs such as healthcare will be allowed to exit from the capital island.

Authorities have also announced that offices can only accomodate 50 percent of its workforce at the workplace. While online meetings are encouraged, work must be done from home where possible.

The number of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives has been increasing drastically over the past few days. While 19 deaths have been recorded to date, 1,490 cases are currently active.
