India remains a beacon of hope, says Maldives Pres

Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that India remains a beacon of hope for the world.

In a message sending Independence Day greetings to the neighbouring country on Twitter, President Solih said India has always been a beacon of hope to the world due to its democratic values and contributions to peace over the past 73 years. He sent his felicitations to India’s President Ram Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India on the occasion of the country's 74th Independence Day.

The relationship between Maldives and India was strained under former president, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s adminstration. While bilateral ties with India have strengthened dramatically since the new government began administration, Indis recently extended US$ 250 million as budget support, and contributed a financial package of US$ 500 million to fund the development of Madives’ second over-water bridge.
