Man who called to incite violence against Pres remanded

Maldives Police Service on Sunday arrested the individual who called to incite against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on live TV.

A call-in participant of ‘Rayyithunge Adu’ program aired on Channel 13 said the President needs to be ‘set on fire’, after which the channel came under fire for entertaining such speech on their platform. Channel 13, largely believed to be a media wing of the opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) later issued a public apology, and said the channel does not encourage violence.

The caller, a 47 year old local man from Thaa Vilufushi has since been arrested under a court order for encouraging terrorism. The police said the man has been remanded into custody for 15 days, and that an investigation is ongoing.
