Journey towards democracy inspired by Gandhi, says Nasheed

Former President of the Maldives and the current Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed on Friday attributed his party's work in democracy to lessons derived from Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence movement.

Mahatma Gandhi was Indian anti-colonial nationalist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule, and in turn inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

In a message posted on Twitter on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, Nasheed wrote that Gandhi’s principles of non-violence and civil disobedience inspired his party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s campaign to bring democrary to the Maldives. The efforts led to the new constitution and the Maldives’ first democratic elections in 2008, said Nasheed.
