COVID-19: Gatherings of over ten people prohibited

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced that gatherings of over ten people in public spaces will not be allowed effective from Friday.

The order issued by the Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakuru said groups of over ten people will not be allowed to meet in public spaces in Male’, Hulhumale’, ViliMale’, Gulhifalhu, Thilafushi and Hulhule’. Maldives Police Service will ensure that the ban is implemented effectively, said the directive.

The number of COVID-19 cases have been increasing dramatically over the past few weeks. While the number of hospitalisations is currently above 200, 2,302 cases are active.

The government on Friday introduced new restrictions, including extending the duration of a vehicle ban in the Greater Male’ Area. The vehicle ban is now effective between 6pm and 6 am. While holding events and parties is already restricted and pre schools remain closed, schools will now be holding classes for grades 1 to 6 online.
