The Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has stated that the number of people getting the COVID-19 vaccine in capital Male’ has declined.
The Maldives began its COVID-19 vaccine drive on February 1st. While over 85,000 people have received the vaccine thus far, Maldives is doing well in vaccinating its population. Currently, the only vaccine being used under the program is Serum Institute India’s COVISHIELD, manufactured under a special licensing issued by AstraZeneca.
Speaking at a press conference held Tuesday night, Director of the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Ahmed Nasir said records show that the number of people getting the vaccine in Male' city is decreasing. He also noted that several people wait to get the vaccine ahead of the weekend. However, it is advised to get the first dose of the two-dose vaccine at the earliest, said Nasir.
Vaccines are given on all days of the week except Friday from a number of vaccine centres, including the Social Centre, ADK HOspital, Treetop Hospital, Hulhumale’ Hospital, Villimale’ Hospital as well as an additional vaccine centre in Hulhumale'. Vaccination is also ongoing at the Islamic Centre and the People’s Majlis. The second dose of the vaccine will be administered eight weeks from the date on which the initial dose was received.
