Govt allowances crucial in surviving pandemic, says pres

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that several families were able to avoid going hungry in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the allowances issued by the government. The president made the statement while speaking at a campaign meeting of the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

During the meeting held with candidates running for Noonu atoll seats in the upcoming local council election, President Solih shared the figure of the amount issued as income support to individuals in Noonu atoll.

The president further noted that several other allowances, including that issued for single parents and the elderly, are given to the country’s citizens. Those in the islands were able to survive the pandemic due to the allowances, said the president. The people of the Maldives would have suffered if no allowances were issued, he added.

The president also highlighted the details of some of the projects carried out by the government focusing on Noonu atoll over the past two years. He assured that the government would continue to work towards the betterment of the atoll.
