Two islands in Faafu atoll will be put up for bid for tourism development purposes.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the move while speaking at a campaign rally held by main-ruling Maldivian Democratic (MDP) for the parties’ local council candidates for Faafu atoll.
President Solih said the government will be putting up two islands up for lease within the year as the government wishes to promote tourism in Faafu atoll. The two islands are F. Enbulufushi and Jinnathugau, said the president.
Three islands from Faafu atoll were leased for tourism development during former president Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayyoom’s presidency. They are Himmithi, Mushimasgili and Maafushi. President Solih voiced concern that the projects are not moving forward, and said the Tourism Ministry is seeking a solution on the matter.
Only one resort, ‘Filitheyo Island Resort’ is currently operated in Faafu atoll. One of the shareholders of the resort is Minister at President’s Office, Ali Shiyam.
