Maldives hits new one-day COVID-19 death record

The Maldives reported a record one-day COVID-19 toll of 7 on Wednesday as the archipelago struggles amid a raging wave of infections.

Since the pandemic began in 2020, the Maldives has confirmed a total of 48,608 infections and 112 deaths. Statistics collected over the past 24 hours show 1,187 confirmed cases, out of which 965 cases were from the Greater Male' area. The remaining 214 cases were confirmed from the atolls, including local resorts.

According to HPA, an 87 year old local male and a 69 year old local female admitted at Laamu COVID Management facility passed away early Wednesday morning at 01:54am and 03:01 am respectively. A 73 year old Maldivian male brought to state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male' was declared dead later at 7:25 am, while a 63 year old local female and a 51 year old Indian male admitted at Hulhumale' Medical Facility passed away at 08:30am and 08:44 am. The number of deaths hit 6 before noon when another death occurred at 09:48am at the same facility when a 66 year old Maldivian male passed away. The seventh death was recorded at 12:16 pm when a 62-year old Maldivian female brought to IGMH ER was declared dead at 12:16 pm.

Health care professionals are urging the public to get vaccinated and practice the precautionary measures in place to control the spread of the virus.
