Former World Bank Chief Economist appointed as Advisor to Finance Minister

Former Acting Chief Economist of the World Bank, Dr. Shantha Devarajan has been appointed as Advisor to Finance Minister, Ibrahim Ameer.

According to the Ministry, the appointment was made on May 20. The Finance Minister said Dr. Devarajan's expertise and strategic guidance is imperative to strengthen and foster closer ties with international partners, and will help to make the Maldives' economy more resilient in the wake of a global pandemic.

Dr. Devarajan holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and A.B. in Mathematics from Princeton University. He is a professor of the practice of international development at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and was previously the Chief Economic of the World Bank to the Middle East and North Africa, Africa and South Asia regions and Human Development Network. He was also a Director of the 2004 World Development Report.
