Foreign Minister discusses COVID-19 situation with Russian counterpart

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Thursday.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the two ministers discussed the challenges faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic and briefed on the measures taken by the respective governments to contain the spread of the virus and to deal with the unprecedented global health emergency.

The Ministers also discussed ways to overcome the economic and financial consequences of the virus. Foreign Minister Lavrov reassured the Russian Government’s commitment to expedite the procurement of vaccines from Russia to the Maldives and continue working with the Government of Maldives to further enhance the existing cooperation between the two countries.

Both Ministers further stressed the need for joint efforts in responding to COVID-19 and reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation and collaboration in advancing interests on areas of mutual concern.

The phone call between the two ministers took place at a time when the Maldives is preparing to order 200,000 doses of Russian-made COVID-19 vaccine, Sputnik V.
