Maldives to be among first countries to receive vaccines from US

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has expressed gratitude following the US's announcement that it would donate vaccines to the Maldives.

The US on Thursday detailed plans to donate at least 80 million coronavirus vaccine doses globally by the end of June, including India and other parts of Asia. India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, the Maldives, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan and the Pacific Islands are listed as recipients of 7 million vaccine doses allocated to Asia.

In a tweet posted on Thursday, Minister Shahid said the US Government's announcement to include the Maldives among the first countries to receive COVID-19 vaccines from USA is a testament to the trusted and close relationship between both countries.

Meanwhile, the US Government has airlifted emergency medical supplies to the Maldives to help curb the spread of COVID-19. The donation includes PPE and medical equipment, and will be officially handed over to the Maldives' government on Friday.
