The damage caused in the fire incident that occurred at Ma. Morning View on May 27 exceeds MVR 1.3 million, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said.
Deputy CEO of NDMA, Umar Fikuree Sunday said a joint assessment was conducted by NDMA and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to inspect and identify the extent of the damage caused to the building in the fire. In this regard, damage to the building structure as well as the items in the house were assessed. In addition to Ma. Morning View, assessments were conducted on eight other households in the vicinity of the building.
According to NDMA, the government will pay MVR 150,000 even if the damage caused to the structures of the houses is below the amount. However, the same amount will be paid even if the damage is above the stated amount. The government will be paying a total of MVR 700,000 to affected families as an assistance, and is not compensation for the damage, said NDMA.
In addition to the amount being provided as assistance, MVR 342,000 was spent on temporary accommodation and relief aid, said NDMA. Two families that were renting apartments in the Morning View building were assisted in shifting to another accommodation, and NDMA provided MVR 92,300 to arrange accommodation while the original building is being reconstructed.
The plot on which the Morning View building is situated has two buildings. NDMA said the western building on the plot was damaged beyond repair in the fire. While 56 individuals live in both buildings, this includes 17 children below the age of 18.
