GAM shares concerns due to COVID-19 with Pres Solih

The Guesthouse Association of Maldives (GAM) on Sunday shared concerns with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih regarding issues faced by guesthouses due to the current COVID-19 situation.

Along with the president, the online meeting held via Zoom on June 20 was attended by Economic Minister Fayyaz Ibrahim, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer, and Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom. An official from GAM said the association received a 'green signal' that indicated that the proposals shared during the meeting were acceptable to the government. He added that the concerns shared during the meeting were based on feedback received from island and city councils regarding challenges faced by the islands in conducting local tourism activities during the current pandemic.

Approximately 600 guesthouses are operated across the Maldives, and the number of beds available at these facilities exceeds 10,000 beds. The local tourism sector is one of the hardest hit business sectors due to COVID-19.
