Central Maafannu councilor Ahmed Nareesh has been elected Deputy Mayor of Male’ City.
Nareesh was backed by the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) that holds council majority with 13 councilors. While 19 members sit on Male' City Council, Nareesh won 12 votes against his opponent, Central Macchangolhi councilor Ahmed Zameer, who won 7 votes in the vote taken at Male' City Council on Monday.
Deputy Mayors are elected through a secret ballot among City Council members. Deputy Mayors receive MVR 35,000 per month as salary and remuneration.
