Hulhudhoo MP summoned for May 6 inquiry

Hulhudhoo MP, Ilyas Labeeb was summoned to the Parliament's Security Services Committee (241 Committee) on Saturday for its inquiry into the May 6 attack that targeted PArliament Speaker and former president, Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking to AVAS, MP Ilyas said he attended the committee at 10:00 am. However, he did not disclose further details.

MP Ilyas had alerted Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi a few days before the May 6 attack that Nasheed was being targeted for such an attack. He later gave a statement regarding the same to the 241 committee. Ilyas, who used to sit on the committee, stepped aside from the committee last week.

The 241 committee has previously summoned Defence Minister Mariya, Home Minister Imran Abdulla, Police Commissioner Mohamed Hamee, Chief of Defense Force Major General Abdulla Shamal, Vice Chief of Defence Force Brigadier General AbdulRaheem Abdul Latheef, President Nasheed's SPG bodyguards as well as senior officials from Maldives Monetary Authority for its inquiry. The committee's chair, Hithadhoo South MP Mohamed Aslam has said the inquiry will be wrapped up sometime this week.

Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital in Maldives' capital Male' on the night of May 6 after he sustained serious injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the blast occurred when an IED strapped to a motorcycle was detonated. Multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital, and he is currently recuperating from his injuries in Germany. He was admitted and treated at a German military hospital and has since been released. However, his treatment continues. Five arrests have been made in connection to the case.
